He supervises the research and academic program of graduate students studying oceanographic engineering through the MIT\/WHOI Joint Program in the areas of control, robotics, and design. Dr. Yoerger has been a key contributor to the remotely-operated vehicle Jason; to the Autonomous Benthic Explorer known as ABE; most recently, to the autonomous underwater vehicle, Sentry; the hybrid remotely operated vehicle, Nereus which reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 2009, and most recently Mesobot, a hybrid robot for midwater exploration. Dr. Yoerger has gone to sea on over 95 oceanographic expeditions including the Titanic discovery cruise in 1985, many expeditions researching the Mid-Ocean Ridge, mapping underwater seamounts and volcanoes, surveying ancient and modern shipwrecks, studying the environmental effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the recent effort that located the Voyage Data Recorder from the merchant vessel El Faro. His current research focuses on robots for exploring the midwater regions of the world&#8217;s ocean. Dr. Yoerger has served on several National Academies committees and served as a member of the Research Board of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative for 10 years. He is Fellow IEEE since 2021, Fellow AAIA since 2023 and AIIA Fellow since 2024. His research interests include marine and industrial robotics, multi-agent systems, identification. He has published more than 60 international journal papers and 130 conference papers, he is author of the book Underwater Robots (Springer, 2003, 2006, 2014, 2018) and co-authored the chapter Underwater Robotics for the Springer Handbook of Robotics, (Springer, 2008, 2016). From 2016 to 2021 he has been member elected of the <em>IEEE Robotics &amp; Automation Society<\/em> (RAS) Administrative Committee, he has been coordinator of the EuRobotics Topic Group in Marine Robotics, he chaired the euRobotics PhD award for 10 editions, he has been secretary of the IEEE-Italy section, he has been chair of the IEEE RAS Italian Chapter, he has been Chair of the IEEE RAS Technical Committee in Marine Robotics. He is serving in the Editorial Board of <em>International Journal of Robotics Research<\/em> and served the <em>IEEE Transactions on Robotics, IEEE Transactions on Control System Technology, and Intelligent service robotics<\/em> (Springer). Her research focuses on risk assessment and modeling for autonomous marine systems and the humans who supervise them. She has developed a new research area called supervisory risk control, which builds risk assessment and modeling directly into control systems so that autonomous systems can make safer, smarter decisions. This work earned her an ERC Advanced Grant for the project &#8220;Breach&#8221; (2025\u20132029). Utne has also led several nationally funded interdisciplinary projects that bring together risk science, control engineering, and AI. One example is SAFEGUARD (2023\u20132027), focusing on autonomous systems for critical infrastructure protection in the ocean, carried out with Equinor, V\u00e5r Energi, and the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment. At NTNU, she teaches courses in risk analysis and RAMS. Since 2019, she has co-organized the International Workshop on Autonomous Systems Safety (IWASS) with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Stuttgart. She has supervised 17 PhD students and 7 postdocs, many of whom now hold positions in industry and academia around the world. Utne is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences and co-chair of the ESRA Technical Committee on Maritime and Offshore Technology. She has helped shape public safety policy through her work on the official Norwegian report NOU 2022:1 on cruise ship safety.
