Churches
Krakow for centuries was the capital of Poland, the seat of royal and ecclesiastical power. In this city, tradition and history are of great importance – churches, monasteries and other religious buildings are one of the main elements that make up its historic character. Religion is an integral part of the history and collective identity of Poles. The historical map of Krakow now includes about 360 historic churches, most of them of undoubted historical significance.

Krakow’s Kazimierz
Krakow’s Kazimierz is a special place, shaped by centuries of Christian-Jewish neighborliness. Jews appeared in Kazimierz in the middle of the 14th century and until the beginning of the 19th century lived in the territory of the “Jewish city,” enclosed within today’s Miodowa, St. Lawrence, Wąska, Józefa and Bożego Ciała streets. It was an autonomous enclave – Jews governed themselves there – over them they had only the king, on whose behalf authority was exercised by the governor of Krakow.

Wieliczka Salt Mine
As legend has it, the Wieliczka salt mine (12 km from Krakow) owes its existence to the Hungarian princess Kinga, wife of Prince Boleslaw the Chaste. Kinga threw an engagement ring into a salt shaft in Hungary, and when the wedding retinue was approaching Krakow, she pointed out the place where she ordered the jewel to be unearthed. This is how the extensive salt deposits in Wieliczka were encountered. However, excavations prove that salt was brewed in the area as early as 3,000 BC. The oldest mining shaft was created in the 13th century, at which time Wieliczka was granted city rights. For 700 years, miners drilled 26 shafts and more than 2,000 chambers in the salt seams on 9 underground levels, with depths ranging from 57 to 327 meters. They are connected by walkways and shafts with a total length of 350 km.
