Tourism

City of Arts and Sciences

The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) is a cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is the most important modern tourist destination in the city of Valencia and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain. The City of Arts and Sciences is situated at the southeast end of the former riverbed of the river Turia, which was drained and rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957. The old riverbed was turned into a picturesque sunken park.

City Center

Valencia has a rich artistic heritage, full of art and masterpieces from previous civilisations. If you have strolled around the streets, you will have already seen it all. You will fall in love if you have not already. Wander around the streets, but keep your eyes wide open, because there is something special to see in every corner.

Take a walk around the historic centre, enjoy a lovely cup of hot chocolate with buñuelos or a horchata with fartons to gather more energy to carry on. Discover the Holy Chalice in the cathedral, feel the thrill in the Basílica de la Vírgen de los Desamparados (Basilica of our Lady of the Forsaken), and enjoy the Central Market and all the stalls full of top-quality fresh food. Have a rest and eat a few tapas in the sun on one of the many bar terraces, then continue your walk along to the Lonja de la Seda, a Valencian Gothic-style civil building. And, if you still have enough energy to keep going, why not visit the Valencian Sistine Chapel: Church of San Nicolás.

Food

Valencia is known for its gastronomic culture. The paella, a simmered rice dish with meat (usually chicken or rabbit), was born in Valencia. Other traditional dishes of Valencian gastronomy include fideuà, arròs al forn, arròs a banda, arròs negre (black rice), fartons, bunyols, Spanish omelette, pinchos or tapas and calamares (squid). Valencia was also the birthplace of the cold chufa (Cyperus esculentus) beverage known as orxata, popular in many parts of the world.

Languages

Valencian and Spanish are the official languages. Valencia proper and its surrounding metropolitan area are, along with the Alicante and Castellón areas, the traditionally Valencian-speaking territories of Spain where the Valencian language is spoken and read. You will find the plaques that serve as street signs and many other signs in valencian language.
